Waterford FC are through to the second round of the FAI Cup following an extraordinary game in Athlone on Friday night.
Anthony Wordsworth put Waterford in front after 40 minutes and Shane Griffin increased the lead seven minutes into the second half.
Wordsworth then picked up a second yellow card on 69 minutes and the entire game was turned on its head. George Forrest handled inside the 18 yards box and Glen McCauley made no mistake with the spot-kick. That 74th-minute goal was followed by a Stephen Meany equaliser on 84 minutes.
Darragh Power then handled and again McCauley was successful from the spot. That 89th-minute goal appeared to have won the game for Athlone but Greg Halford unbelievably made it 3-3 two minutes later.
George Forrest put Waterford in front three minutes into time added on of extra time. Straight from the restart, Glen McCauley scored once again this time from the halfway line.
The penalty shootout saw Shane Griffin. Cameron Evans, Timmi Sobowale, and John Martin scored for Waterford.
Paul Martin saved from Jack Reynolds and Dylan Hand after Glen McCauley and Garry Comerford had scored for the midlanders.
