Kyle Shelly scored 2-8 as Tipperary defeated Waterford 4-13 to 0-7 in the first round of the Munster minor football championship at Sean Treacy Park last night.

Shelly raised Tipp's first green flag after just six minutes. Points from Aaron Ryan, Aidan Behan and Sean Walsh got Waterford back into contention during the first quarter.

Two goals in a minute from Premier midfielders Paddy Creedon and Tom Tobin ended the contest however as the hosts led 3-8 to 0-5 at the break.

Tom O'Connell kicked two consolation frees for Waterford on the restart. Full forward Shelly sealed the win with his second goal six minutes into injury time.

Deise manager Tom Guiry said that they couldn't cope with Tipp's counter attacking game.

Tom says Tipp's quick-fire brace of goals before half-time was a big moment in the game.

Two dual players started for Waterford last night but Guiry believes that it's becoming increasingly difficult for minors to juggle both codes.

Last year's beaten finalists Clare made a bright start to this year's Electric Ireland Munster Minor Football Championship last night.

Jamie Stack, Diarmuid Fahy and Eoin Talty each found the net in a comfortable 3-15 to 10-point win over Limerick in Newcastlewest.

Waterford now turn their attentions to what's a crucial Round 2 game next Wednesday with a home tie against Limerick, and the Déise management team are appealing for supporters to come out in their numbers to give the team some vital support.
