Colm Bonnar's Carlow led by 0-3 to 0-1 after eight minutes. Martin Kavanagh struck two points with Richard Coady also on target. Waterford hit back with two goals in quick succession. The home side held a 2-7 to 0-7 advantage at the break as conditions worsened.
Nine minutes into the second period, Shane Bennett found the top corner of the net. Stephen Bennett sent over five frees as the contest fizzled out. Diarmuid Byrne and Ger Coady were sent off for Carlow in the second half as the visitors could only add three more points.
