Waterford secure victory over Derry City in first top-flight game since 2007

Waterford made a winning return to the Premier League when they came from behind to defeat Derry City at the RSC last night.

The home side started brightly, on a wet, miserable, evening in front of a capacity crowd, however Derry scored the opening goal on 19 minutes. Aaron McEneff whipped in a left-wing shot to Armin Aganovic who got past keeper Niall Corbet with a close range header.

Waterford drew level with just minutes to go in the first half. Bastian Héry and Rory Feely set up Gavan Holohan who fired a shot beneath Derry's Ger Doherty and into the net.

The game's winning goal arrived in the 77th minute. Stanley Aborah back-heeled the ball to Garry Comerford down the left before crossing where Dean O'Halloran hammered home from close-range.

Next up is a Munster Derby against the double champions of of 2017 Cork City in Turners Cross.

Reigning champions Cork were 3-2 winners away to Saint Pats, despite letting a two goal lead slip.

Bohs came from a goal behind to beat arch rivals Shamrock Rovers 3-1 at Dalymount Park.

Meanwhile Dundalk and Bray Wanderers played out a scoreless draw at Oriel Park.

Tonight Sligo Rovers and Limerick are the last two sides to get their campaign underway.

They meet at the Showgrounds from 7.45.
