There was a time when Waterford firmly had Galway’s number. In fact, Galway had never beaten the Déise in the Championship before 2017, with Waterford winning ten straight encounters. But that is history — and we all know how 2017 ended.

Galway face Waterford this afternoon at 2 pm in Pearse Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on WLR, thanks to George Corbett Skoda

Waterford travel west in mixed form. They failed to close out the game against a weakened Kilkenny side last time out, and that result could yet prove costly. However, manager Peter Queally will take plenty of positives from Nolan Park. Seán Mackey made a big impact off the bench, while Stephen Bennett and Jack Prendergast gained valuable minutes. The Ballygunner contingent has returned, though they may need time to settle fully.

Waterford make four changes from the last outing. Sean Mackey starts, alongside Jack Prendergast, Michael Kiely, and the returning Ian Kenny.

Galway, under Micheál Donoghue, comes into the game on the back of a convincing win over Offaly. Some may argue that Waterford’s tight battle in Nolan Park could stand to them more than Galway’s comfortable victory. Time will tell.

Galway have one win so far in the league, while Waterford have two. Both sit dangerously close to the bottom of the table. A win would put survival firmly in the victor’s hands. Victory for Waterford would almost secure Division 1A status. If Galway win, it sets up a dramatic final round where both sides may need results.

Call it a relegation battle if you like — but expect bite, intensity and a serious edge in Pearse Stadium this afternoon.
