Wexford football boss Paul Galvin felt that Saturday’s South East derby could have been called off at half time as Storm Ciara brought driving wind and rain to Fraher Field.

“Certainly by the end of it, it was totally unplayable stuff. At the start of the game, the thing was just about playable. By half time, it wasn’t playable really. It’s done now and we’ve the points and we’re happy.”

The inclement weather made it treacherous for both teams. “It was hard to call it football really, there was loads of possession spilled, lots of stuff on the ground and lots of scrappy stuff. There wasn’t a whole lot of football played but the effort and the desire and the commitment of both sets of players was fantastic.”

Waterford manager Benji Whelan agreed with Galvin’s assessment. “It does make a bit of a mockery of the thing. It’s a real lottery when you’re playing in those conditions. Fellas can’t display the football skills they have.”
