"I travelled 180,000 miles, which is from here to San Francisco thirty times!"

Michael Ryan has been in charge of both the Waterford and Westmeath hurlers and managed Waterford against Westmeath in the 2013 All Ireland championship. During his four years in charge of the Lake County, he became very familiar with the road from Ballymacarbry to Mullingar.

"It's just under 200 kilometres each way so that's 400 kilometres. I travelled up there over 600 times in four years, about 180,000 miles, which is from here to San Francisco thirty times! Look, I never looked at it like that, I enjoyed every bit of it."
