The Waterford Senior Hurling Manager says he's sorry to be losing Philip Mahony who has announced his
retirement from inter county hurling.

The 28 year old Ballygunner defender has been a Waterford regular over the past nine years.

He won a Munster medal in 2010 and a National League in 2015, started the 2017 All Ireland final and was nominated for an All Star on three occasions.

Waterford GAA thanked Philip for his commitment and dedication to Waterford Hurling over the last number of years and wished him all the Best for the future.

Liam Cahill says he was really disappointed to be the bearer of bad news when he told the players the news at training last night.

He says Philip met with him yesterday to let him know of his decision.

Speaking to WLR Liam Cahill said "Philip Mahony for the period of time I know him, over the last couple of weeks is all really since Ballygunner exited
the Championship, he's a really top class measured individual and this is a decision I would say Philip would not have come to rashly. I would say it is
a decision he would have mulled over for quite a while. He would have been in with us for the last number of weeks doing a bit of gym work initially, carrying a few
knocks from his club campaign so I would say that he would have thought about this long and hard and as I said it's not a decision he would have came to lightly."

Liam Cahill says he's disappointed to lose a player like Philip.

"I would have loved to have been able to work with Philip, I was a huge admirer of him from the stand over the years as an observer of Waterford hurling and having got to
know him over the last couple of weeks, he definitely brought his character out onto the field in his style of play as well. I am so disappointed to lose a man of that caliber
to be honest.
He says the intensity of where inter county senior hurling is gone and the preparation and commitment involved is something that eventually wears heavy
on everybody."
