Award winning Love Hate actor Connors has written film scripts, but this is his first time writing a play. Ireland's Call is a one man show (performed by himself) about three Dublin teenagers enticed into a life of crime. It's in Waterford for one night only, on Wednesday March 13th at 8pm. You'll find out more about Garter Lane Art's Centre here

The play has been developed in assocation with Show in a Bag, an artistic development initiative for the Dublin Fringe Festival, Fishamble: The New Theatre Company and The Irish Film Institute.

The massive success of Love Hate

John Connors played the character Patrick Ward in the hit RTE drama about the Dublin criminal underworld. He told me that he only realised on a night out, just as Season 5 was being aired, just how huge the show had become and how much impact the character of Patrick had.

Connors has gone on to be involved in a number of other successful productions, including Cardboard Gangsters, a 2017 Irish crime movie set in Darndale, Coolock, County Dublin.

He's a proud member of the Travelling community, and had great reaction to his IFTA award winning documentary series I am Traveller, where he embarked on a personal journey about his own ethnicity and tackled some uncomfortable truths about racial stereotyping.

Writing and performing a one-man show

John went onto talk to me about how his play Ireland's Call is being received. He said it's been great so far, having performed to standing ovations at the Dublin Fringe festival. It's also been staged in New York where he didn't think it would go down well, but he was delighted to realise the audience loved it. He says he doesn't have too many reservations about doing a one-man show as he's been able to relax into the part.
