Author of "47 Seconds" Jane Ryan with Mary, in studio "On the Fringe"

Dublin-based author Jane has a very diverse background, having worked in the accounting and tech sector for many years. However she says writing was always in her, and she built the book around the character Detective Garda Brigid Harney, who she'd created in her head a long time ago.  She has dabbled in creative writing over the years, but 47 Seconds is her first novel. You'll find out more here

What is 47 Seconds about?

This is a gritty crime novel, with Brigid in its lead, and begins when a grim discovery is made at the Dublin docklands. While Brigid is busy dealing with this investigation, she's also becoming more and more obsessed with Seán Flannery, who's been accused of the sexual assault of a minor.

Research

Jane tells me that when she took a closer look at her family tree, she realised that many members of her family were members of an Garda Síochána, so she was inspired to build her characters around the Force. She says she did a huge amount of research into criminal cases and spoke to many Gardaí who helped her on the right path towards writing accounts of crime and brutality.

Contemporary

Jane wanted the book to be set in modern times and from the off there are references to Brexit and other contemporary Irish situations. She also doesn't shy away with dealing with issues like casual sexism for women in male dominated workplaces, as well as the issue of sexual assault.
