The annual Ironman race in Youghal will not take place in 2024, following the deaths of two competitors at this year's event.

64-year-old Ivan Chittenden and 45-year-old Brendan Wall died during the swimming element of the race on August 20th.

In a statement today, Ironman organisers say the pause will allow for further healing and have described the region as having one of the most passionate host communities in the world.

Kay Curtain from Youghal Chamber of Tourism and Commerce says the town is coming to terms with the news today.

"It's devastating for the town," she said.

"From February each year we have athletes here training, staying in accommodation. It's a big blow for the town."

Ms Curtain reiterated her sympathies to the families of the two athletes who died.
