The XL Bully dog is to become the first to be banned in the history of the Irish State.

The move, due to be announced today, is on foot of a series of serious attacks on people by the crossbreed in recent years.

Most recently, Limerick woman Nicole Morey was fatally injured by her own dogs on her return home.

Additionally, in 2022, a young boy living in Co. Wexford, Alejandro Mizsan was left with severe facial injuries following an attack by a dog.

The ban will be approached in two phases: From October 1st there will be outright ban on breeding, rehoming, re-selling and importing of XL Bully dogs.

While on February 1st 2025, there will be a ban on owning an XL Bully dog.

Ownership will still be permitted in the case of a special 'certificate of exemption.'

This is granted where owners can prove their XL bully is neutered, microchipped, and licensed.
