Works are set to begin on the construction of a crematorium in West Waterford this year, following the granting of planning permission by the local authority.

Permission was granted for the crematorium in Tallow late last year.

Aidan Walsh had lodged an application with Waterford City and County Council seeking to construct the facility at Michael J Prendergast Road, Tallow.

The application sought to extend the existing funeral home to provide a crematorium and showroom on the northern side of the building with a chapel and ancillary accommodation on the southern side of the building, along with all associated site works including amendments to car parking areas.

In welcoming the decision, Aidan Walsh said the construction of the crematorium will provide families and funeral firms in Waterford with a nearby option for cremation.

“This new facility will provide rural communities with the opportunity of having their cremation service in Tallow, which will also provide jobs to the local community, support local business and boost the local economy,” he said.

Construction works are to begin later this year.
