A body was found last night during the search for a missing woman in the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford.

37-year-old Gillian Ryan from Thurles was last seen on Sunday.

The mother of two was an experienced runner and member of Thurles Crokes athletic club - she was last seen at lunchtime on Sunday when she went for a run alone in the mountains.

Following an extensive multi-agency search, which lasted for over 24 hours, her body was discovered in a deep gully close to the top of Coumshinghuan lake at around 6.30 yesterday.

The scene has been preserved pending the technical operation to recover the body this morning.

Tipperary Councillor Sean Ryan said everyone in the Horse and Jockey area was "numbed with shock":

"Gillian was a much-loved person up here, she was a larger than life character. We often met her running in the area she was a great athlete and a great mother to her children, a great wife to her husband Conor and just a really really lovely person and the whole community is absolutely devastated by her loss."
