WLR has been nominated in two categories at this year’s IMRO Radio Awards.
The annual event marks the very best in Irish radio broadcasting and recognises those who have made contributions over the year.
Deise Today is in the running to be named best local/regional current affairs programme. Presenter Damien Tiernan, who joined WLR in January, and his producer Jennifer Long are shortlisted for their coverage of the ‘Waterford Acid Attack’.
17-year-old Tega Agberhiere suffered severe burns to his face, head and neck in an incident in Earlscourt last April. Tega and his mother Christy spoke to Damien from his hospital bed and during his recovery from the horrific injuries.

WLR’s second nomination is in the Drama category. Jetty Stars is a play for radio written by Noel Kelly and produced by Michael Grant. It was broadcast in October as part of the Imagine Arts Festival.
It features Waterford actress Lorraine Murphy as Stella, a former prostitute, just released from prison having served a seventeen-year sentence for the brutal murder of her lover and pimp.
The play is set on the deserted docks and wharves of the Waterford Quayside.

The IMRO Radio Awards will be presented at a gala ceremony in the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny on Friday October 4th.
