The WLR acquisition marks a significant shift in the Irish media landscape, with dmg media Ireland entering the broadcast sector for the first time.
The company has confirmed it has acquired a majority shareholding in WLR FM, the leading independent radio station serving Waterford city and county.
Strong audience reach in Waterford
The WLR acquisition brings a station with a strong local presence into the dmg media Ireland portfolio.
WLR attracts 65% of all adults in Waterford each week and 43% on a daily basis. The station broadcasts across FM and digital platforms and reaches an audience of approximately 73,000 weekly listeners.
Over recent years, WLR has built a reputation for high editorial standards and strong community engagement. It has also won Ireland’s Local Radio Station of the Year five times between 2019 and 2024.
Strategic expansion into broadcasting
The WLR acquisition represents a strategic expansion for dmg media Ireland, which has built its reputation across print and digital media brands.
The move marks the company’s first major step into broadcasting, adding radio to its growing media portfolio.
The company said WLR will benefit from its scale and investment capabilities, while continuing to maintain its local identity and editorial focus.
Leadership welcomes new partnership
Paul Henderson, CEO of dmg media Ireland, said the company is looking forward to working with the Waterford-based station.
“We’re delighted to welcome the entire WLR team into the dmg media Ireland group. Their professionalism and broadcasting expertise will complement our existing strengths and help us deliver even more engaging content to audiences,” he said.
He added that the company has built strong media brands by connecting with audiences through content and now plans to bring that approach to broadcasting.
New chapter for WLR
Michael Byrne, CEO of WLR, described the WLR acquisition as a major milestone for the station.
“This marks a significant milestone for WLR and signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the station,” he said.
He noted that radio has evolved into a multi-platform experience and said the partnership will allow WLR to accelerate its growth in a sustainable way.
The deal signals a new phase for the station, combining its established local presence with the backing of a major media group.
