Winterval 2022 saw the highest number of visitors since before the pandemic.

According to Co-Director of the festival, John Grubb, the footfall counter as used by Waterford City & County Council indicated a significant increase in people walking around the streets of Waterford during the Winterval festival.

Saying that footfall is just one of the ways in which success is measured for the festival, John told WLR that one of the biggest festival changes this year made one of the biggest differences.

"We moved the whole festival into the centre of the city. We took it out of Cathedral Square and Constitutional Square and moved the whole festival into the centre. We could see the increased footfall."

The team disregarded the figures for 2020 and 2021, saying '"it wouldn't be fair," and they compared this year to 2019 in terms of figures and footfall.

"Our footfall was through the roof compared to 2019," says John.
