
Winterval Turns Waterford into a Festive Playground with 26 Free Experiences
Winterval 2025 is set to transform Waterford into a magical festive wonderland once again, as Ireland’s largest Christmas festival — and Europe’s recognised City of Christmas — lights up the city from Thursday to Sunday each week until 23 December.
With over 50 events in total and 26 completely free festive experiences, this year’s programme promises fun, colour, community spirit, and seasonal sparkle for families of all ages.
A Festive City Centre Market Trail
The much-loved Winterval Christmas Market stretches through Great Georges Street, O’Connell Street, Arundel Squar,e and Michael Street, turning the heart of Waterford into a bustling festive village. Visitors can browse handcrafted gifts, festive food and seasonal treats from local makers, all beneath twinkling Christmas lights.
Creative flair continues at the Garter Lane Craft Fair, where local artists and makers showcase handmade gifts in a cosy indoor setting. Meanwhile, the Waterford Cultural Quarter Market offers crafts and creations from makers across the globe.
Lights, Magic, and Sensory Experiences
Glow – Winterval Fairylight Garden transforms New Street Gardens into a calm, sensory-friendly escape, where gentle illuminations create a peaceful retreat from the festival hustle.
Each evening, Winterval Illuminates brings Cathedral Square to life with a colourful looping projection show across the stunning facade of the Irish Silver Museum. The display, featuring festive music and animations, runs every 30 minutes from 5 pm to 8 pm.
At the Apple Market, families are invited into Mirror Magic, a playful corridor of funhouse mirrors where wacky reflections guarantee laughs and memorable photo moments.
Viking History, Live Music and Family Fun
On select Sundays, Deise Medieval’s Viking Yule Village at the Blackfriars Medieval Courtyard brings history alive with re-enactments, traditional crafts and storytelling — offering a festive glimpse into winters of the past.
The Snowball Stage in Cathedral Square becomes the beating heart of live entertainment every Saturday and Sunday, featuring choirs, brass bands, pipers and céilí groups.
Children are also treated to surprise moments at Santa’s Giant Disco Postbox in Arundel Square, where every 30 minutes the postbox bursts into life with lights, music and smoke in a mini disco celebration.
Parades, Cycling, and Community Spirit
Families can enjoy free Christmas movie screenings inside The Reg, complete with hot chocolate and cosy festive vibes.
The popular Truck & Tractor Parade returns on 7 December, filling the Quays with illuminated agricultural vehicles before families get up close to the brightly decorated machines. The festive fun continues on 11 December with the Jingle Bells Cycle, as tinsel-clad cyclists take on a cheerful 2km ride through the city, finishing at Cathedral Square with hot chocolate.
Trails, Traditions, and Thoughtful Moments
The Giving Tree in City Square Shopping Centre invites the community to take part in a heart-warming tradition of festive giving, while the Rotary Club Memorial Christmas Tree in John Roberts Square provides a gentle place for reflection and remembrance.
Children can take part in the Viking Elf Trail, a city-wide scavenger hunt through Waterford’s streets and George’s Court Shopping Centre, while Winterval Photo Orienteering sends families exploring landmark locations using festive visual clues.
The Winterval Festival Club at The Reg offers a warm and welcoming place to relax, meet friends, and soak up the festival atmosphere between events.
A Festive Finale with BuskAid
Winterval 2025 will close with a powerful display of community spirit when BuskAid takes over John Roberts Square on 22 December. Musicians will perform throughout the day to raise funds and awareness for local homelessness services, ending the festival on a note of generosity and goodwill.
With a rich and varied mix of markets, light shows, live music, historical experiences, quirky installations, and community events — all completely free — Winterval 2025 truly offers something for everyone. As Ireland’s largest Christmas festival, Waterford shines as a festive destination every Thursday to Sunday until 23 December.
