Over one million people are expected to visit Waterford this festive season as Winterval 2025, Ireland’s largest Christmas festival, returns bigger and brighter than ever.
Running from November 21st to December 23rd, the six-week celebration will feature 54 events across the city — including 22 brand-new experiences — bringing festive cheer to streets, squares, and venues throughout Ireland’s European City of Christmas.

Opening Weekend to Feature Light Show and Free Drone Display
The festival officially opens on Friday, November 21st at 5.30 pm, when Santa will switch on over 100,000 Christmas lights across Waterford city.
The first Winterval Illuminates light show will then take place at Cathedral Square, proudly sponsored by Bausch + Lomb.

One of this year’s biggest highlights will be a free drone show on Saturday, November 22nd, which will light up the River Suir with dazzling festive designs — a brand-new addition to the Winterval lineup.
54 Festive Events and 22 New Experiences
Families can enjoy Winterval on Ice, explore the Christmas markets, wander through the Glow Fairylight Garden, and catch performances at the Winterval Circus.
New attractions include Santa’s Virtual Reality Sleigh Ride, the MAXI Express Train, and concerts featuring Frances Black, Pa Sheehy, and Susan O’Neill.
Workshops, storytelling, and festive creative events will also take place across the city throughout the six weeks.

Festival Boost for Local Businesses
Speaking at the unveiling of the programme at House of Waterford Crystal, Mayor of Waterford Councillor Seamus Ryan said Winterval “brings our city alive with lights, music, and laughter, while supporting local jobs and businesses.”
Festival Director Trevor Darmody added that Winterval 2025 is “a celebration of joy and imagination — a festival that brings families together in the true spirit of Christmas.”
