Cardinals at the Vatican have elected a new Pope.

White smoke is rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

Cardinals entered the conclave yesterday and black smoke emerged last night and earlier today.

The election came on the first full day of voting by the 133 cardinal electors, who secluded themselves behind the Vatican’s medieval walls yesterday afternoon.

After the new Pope appears on the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, he will then step forward to deliver his first public address and blessing to the gathered crowds.
