"We need to remain vigilant when it comes to the jobs and economic front in Waterford"
Those are the words of local Independent councillor Donal Barry on the back of recent job losses in the City. Earlier this year, Cartamundi announced it was closing its premises on The Cork Road with the loss of two hundred and thirty-four jobs.
Speaking at the most recent Plenary Council meeting of Waterford City and County, Councillor Barry says other cities are recording increases in jobs.
"The loss of several hundred jobs recently in Cartamundi alongside the planned 350 jobs under review by Amgen and the silence on Waterford Airport, I feel we need to be very vigilant on the jobs and economic front in Waterford.
"From mid-July to the present, there were approximately 1,500 jobs announced for Dublin, 100 for Galway, 85 for Wexford, 50 for Meath and Carlow, and 20 remote nationwide.
"Are there any talks taking place with the IDA regarding new jobs for Waterford City and county to replace lost jobs?"
In response, Director of Services Michael Quinn, says engagement is ongoing with the IDA
"In terms of the IDA and engagement, we would engage with them periodically. They are constantly working to invest in the Southeast.
"It's a slow process, and I think most of you would understand the difficulties in terms of attracting businesses. They have had a number of successes in growing existing businesses more so than new businesses, so it does not necessarily see the same headlines.
"You saw the numbers at the last plenary report in terms of the jobs that have been created, and we will have an update on that in the January or February report again."
