Our first category of for the 2019 Waterford Business Awards to be featured on air and online is Community & Social Enterprise, sponsored by the Waterford City Enterprise Centre. The winner, chosen by an independent panel of judges, will be announced at a gala ceremony in The Tower Hotel Waterford on Friday, 8th March.

The shortlist for this category is:

RENEW ENTERPRISES
Renew is Social Enterprise originally operated by Treo Port Lairge CLG, with whom it shares a premises in Kilbarry, Waterford. Renew expanded on programmes developed by Treo and began trading under the name “Renew Enterprises” in March 2018. Renew was set up to create full-time employment for people that have been most distant from the labour market, so that they can learn, train and practice new skills while working in an operating business. Renew offers accredited courses in bike mechanics and small engines, while also creating wood products and repairing lawnmowers, strimmers, bikes, wheelchairs and some gym equipment.

SOLAS CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE
The Solas Cancer Support Centre is a charity that offers free support services to those affected by cancer, their families and carers in the South East. Services are provided in their purpose-built centre in Williamstown, Waterford City along with a West Waterford service based in Dungarvan. Services include Reflexology, Massage, Counselling, Meditation, Yoga and Art Psychotherapy along with a range of Support Groups. The service costs €500,000 per year to operate and is entirely dependent on funds that come from donations and fundraising events. The charity is also supported by over 70 volunteers. The service would not be able to operate without this amazing community support.

THE SHONA PROJECT
The Shona Project aims to educate, empower and inspire today’s Irish girls to become tomorrow’s strong, capable and curious young women. The Project has delivered school workshops all over Ireland and in Africa, providing online supports and events that promote positivity, diversity, equality and, above all else, kindness.
