St. Paul’s Parish Lisduggan launched a proposal for a symbolic landmark on its grounds last week.
The three-sided, 5-metre high clock has been identified as a new monument to mark the Parishes 50th year celebrations in 2022.
The Jubilee Clock Committee, which consists of committed members from the parish and local area, hosted an information session last Friday evening.
A Symbol of Legacy
Father Pat Fitzgerald opened the event, explaining the concept behind the clock: “For humans, the clock is a fundamental symbol because we are creatures of time.”
The Committee went on to explain that the clock reflects the legacy of 50 years, and will stand as witness to the labour, laughter and time shared among those in the community.
Waterford Architect and Developer Niall Harrington recalled the design process and location, presenting illustrations of design concepts that encapsulated the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
Dr Mark Rowe outlined the proposed timeline of events, fundraising and projected completion of the clock by May 2026.
Speaking to WLR, Chairman of the Parish Peter Kelly said: “The Committee that’s there now, I have never seen so much energy. Every meeting we’ve had we’ve left having achieved something. The energy and commitment is incredible, which makes a huge difference when you’ve got a project of that size.”
Councillor John Hearne said that the Committee want people to walk by and say: “isn’t that a fantastic place to live.”
“We got the Father Gregory Way, we planted this year already twenty plum trees, thirty fruit bushes and thousands of bulbs, which need a centre-piece to call attention to it.”
Father Pat Fitzgerald told WLR that St Paul’s is a great Parish and there are wonderful people in the community “living and deceased.”
“Many have given so much of themselves to the community and the church in different ways, so to think that the clock represents them is a really appealing idea. They’re not forgotten over time.”
Waterford City and County Council indicated that it will announce it’s decision to grant or refuse planning permission by the 27th of October.
One local that attended the proposal on Friday expressed her support.
“I think it’s a fabulous idea, the design is stunning, and it’ll be something there forever.”
