Waterford Fianna Fáil Minister of State Mary Butler has blasted what she called "mob rule" in the Dáil yesterday.

Minister Butler was reacting to events which saw the Dáil being suspended, and the failure to elected a Taoiseach.

"We had democracy suppressed -  a situation where there was no respect for a Ceann Comhairle," she told WLR.

"I believe it was a national embarrassment which made news all over the world. It was a new low."

She added: "You wouldn't see it in any workplace in the world. It was akin, at the end, to mob role and was totally unjustified."

Minister Butler said there was "a roadblock by the opposition to block the business of the day", adding she believes Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonlad "came into Dáil Éireann with one intention and one intention only - to stop Micheal Martin being elected Taoiseach".

She said yesterday's objective was to "obstruct, to spin, to divert and to distract".

"The way the Ceann Comhairle was treated yesterday was, in my opinion, bullying at its highest level in the latter stages," she said.
