Following the last mass by the Franciscan order in Waterford on Wednesday of this week, the friary will temporarily close from today (Friday).
After 800 years in the city, the final mass was said at 1 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Franciscan Province of Ireland says there are ongoing discussions about the future of the church on Lady Lane.
However, they say these can't be finalised until a number of other issues are sorted - including urgent repair works.
From today, the church will temporarily close to allow these works to be carried out.
It's hoped it will be open again before the end of spring.
