The Shona Project’s annual Shine Festival 2024 wrapped in Waterford city this afternoon.
Over 2,500 girls from all over Ireland descended on SETU Arena for the two day festival that’s aimed at empowering teenage girls.
The charity was created by Waterford woman Tammy Darcy in honour of her sister Shona who suffered a life altering brain injury in her teenage years and died last year.
The recipient of this year's Shine Hero Award is 16 year old Ava Walsh from Waterford.
Ava’s Dad Stuart died unexpectedly two years ago - and ever since Ava has been channeling her grief in a positive way to raise awareness among other young people.
She spoke to WLR's Dymphna Nugent earlier this year and was also the recipient of the Pat Noctor Award at the Waterford Garda Youth Awards.
