The need for investment at Naíonra Philib Barún in Tramore has been raised in the Dáil.
Sinn Féin TD Conor McGuinness sought an update from Minister for Children Norma Foley this week.
Instead, the question was taken by Minister of State Thomas Byrne.
Deputy McGuinness pointed out that the Naíonra is in a 25 year old one-room prefab and is “no longer fit for purpose”.
“Demand exists to double their spaces immediately if they had additional and fit-for-purpose space,” he explained.
He pointed out that the Naíonra is excluded from capital funding because government is only providing for services that take 1-3 year olds.
“Naíonraí (and bulk of ECCE providers) only take children from 2yrs 8ths,” explained Deputy McGuinness.
“This needs to change and I’ve called on the Minister to urgently reset her Department’s inflexible scheme of priorities for capital funding.”
