Waterford students warned of 'Money Mule' scam

Students are being warned of the consequences of becoming a so-called 'Money Mule' for easy cash.

Waterford Gardaí say it can happen that young people are tricked or coaxed into allowing their bank account to be used to launder money for criminals, in exchange for expensive gifts or a cut of the proceeds.

It might sound harmless, but it carries a 14-year jail sentence on conviction.

Speaking on WLR's Waterford Garda Watch, Garda Brian Quirke says it's something students need to be wary of.

"Herders" are luring students in via Snapchat, Instagram, and even job advertisements.

"Many are being recruited at parties where they may be intoxicated through either drink or drugs and they could be recruited by drug dealers," Garda Quirke said.

If a student does get involved as a money mule, there are serious consequences.

Your house may be searched and you could be arrested.

If arrested, you may be fingerprinted and photographed, and then if charged with money laundering offences and convicted, you may face up to 14 years in jail.

Students are being urged to think about their futures, as if this was it happen, it would affect them getting visas to travel to Canada, America, and Australia.

It would also causes problems for students when they are trying to get a mortgage.
