Up to 1,000 Waterford students walk out of their classrooms to call for more action on climate change

Traffic was brought to a standstill in Waterford City as hundreds of students walked out of their classrooms to call on the Government to do more to tackle climate change.

It's part of a worldwide effort inspired by teenage activist Greta Thunberg.

Primary and secondary school children gathered in in John Roberts Square at noon and marched to City Hall, where they addressed the crowd.

Desmond Kavanagh, a 6th year student at Abbey Community College, said he had to do something:

"This is kind of important - living until I'm 50. Actually it is that drastic. The UN have released a damning report saying that by 2050 it will reach an extinction level event."

A student at Newtown School said she's prepared to miss more school to "fight for the cause".

"People are saying we shouldn't be coming out of school for this but I think it's more important that we protect our futures with a strike than miss one day of school."
