"Obviously I'm hoping the members will support me and if I am selected I'm really looking forward to meeting as many people as possible during the campaign," he said.

The 46-year-old outlined why he came to the decision now.

"My life took a different path a couple of years ago with a few different personal things. I found myself back in Ireland and back in my hometown of Waterford. I feel it's the right time for me in my life. I gave the opportunity a lot of thought before deciding 'let's go with this'."

The entertainer is well known for his involvement with pantomimes and also appeared on the RTE TV show 'Celebrity Bainisteoir'.
