The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has revealed that it served closure orders on two Waterford shops last month.
Environmental health officers from the HSE carried out an inspection of Euro Corner, 13 Broad Street, on October 7th.
They found evidence of rodent activity on the first floor, in the store room and in the food preparation area.
Bags of coffee beans and powdered spices had gnaw marks.
The city centre shop was closed for several days and the order was lifted on October 16th.
The FSAI reports that the Wisla Polish shop at Unit 2, Park Road Business Park, Park Road, Waterford was served a closure order on October 24th.
It's after the authority received two separate food complaints of smoked mackerel covered in maggots.
Officers found boxes of food and loose food items were being stored on the floor throughout the premises, and bins outside were overflowing.
Staff on duty demonstrated a lack of an adequate understanding or training in HACCP or food safety management.
When asked to produce food safety records regarding the fish at the centre of the complaints, there were no supplier, delivery or traceabilty records available. All product details including labelling had been disposed off.
The closure order was lifted on October 31st.
