A Waterford Senator has settled his libel action with the publishers of a Kilkenny newspaper.

Paudie Coffey took a case against Iconic Media Group over a January 2016 article in the Kilkenny People which he claimed called him a highway robber.

A jury failed to reach a verdict following a 13-day hearing last December.

Senator Coffey’s solicitor read out a statement in court this morning confirming that they have reached an agreement to settle the case.

In it, he says he is pleased that Iconic Media Group has recognised his good name and reputation and have stated that he is a person of integrity.

The publisher has agreed to remove the article and any other references to it, from all of their associated websites and social media platforms.

Senator Coffey thanked his family and friends for their support. He added that he is glad to be able to put this case behind him and looks forward to continuing as a public representative in the Oireachtas with his good name and reputation intact.

He said he will be making no further comment in relation to the case.
