Waterford has seen the biggest drop in the country for new car registrations, according to new figures from the Society of the Motor Industry (SIMI).

New car registrations in Waterford between January and August 2024 were down 8.68%.

There were 2,389 new car registrations compared to 2,616 for the same period last year.

Nationally, registrations are down 0.9% on the same period last year.

Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General, said: “August represents the sixth consecutive month of falling new car registrations this year, highlighted by the continuing drop in Electric Vehicle (EV) sales, which are now down 25% year to date when compared to last year."

New Electric Vehicle sales to date are at 15,129.

At 12.2%, the drop in EV registrations in Waterford wasn't as high as other areas. Rural counties including Cavan, Mayo, Galway, Clare Sligo and Leitrim all saw a drop in excess of 40%.

SIMI is calling on the Government to prioritise support for EVs in Budget 2025.
