Waterford is set to benefit from more than €9 million in Government funding in 2026 to advance a wide range of Active Travel and Greenway projects aimed at enhancing walking, cycling and sustainable transport infrastructure across the city and county.

The investment forms part of a national allocation of €360 million for Active Travel and Greenways, announced by the Department of Transport and supported across Government.

The funding package will underpin almost 1,000 projects nationwide next year, including major upgrades in Waterford.

Key Local Investments include over €4 million for the Tramore Ring Road Active Travel Scheme, a transformative project that will deliver approximately 3km of improved pedestrian and cycling facilities.

Additional notable Waterford allocations include:

€460,000 for the Active Travel Pathfinder Project designed to help transform the Lismore residential area into a 15 minute neighbourhood through active-travel measures.

€385,543 for the Williamstown Road Active Travel Scheme, which aims to connect the Outer Ring Road with Gaelscoil Port Láirge.

€200,000 for continued work on the North Quays Public Infrastructure project, a key element of Waterford’s wider urban redevelopment.

€500,000 for the development of new bus shelters countywide, supporting improved public transport accessibility.

The funding is being delivered under the National Transport Authority’s Active and Sustainable Transport Investment Programme, which received a national allocation of €290 million for walking and cycling infrastructure in cities, towns, and villages.

A number of local representatives have emphasised that the combined €9+ million package will boost major infrastructural improvements while reinforcing Waterford’s reputation as a leader in outdoor recreation and sustainable mobility.

Mary Butler T.D., Government Chief Whip & Minister for Mental Health, stated “This €9,010,000 investment is dedicated to the development of walking and cycling projects that offer safe, sustainable and healthy transport options to communities around Waterford.”

John Cummins T.D., Minister of State for Planning & Local Government, said: “Today’s announcement further displays the Government’s commitment to improving walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure across the county.”
