Waterford rail investment has been left out of the Government’s latest Rail Project Prioritisation Strategy, raising fresh concerns about infrastructure funding in the South East.

The Department of Transport strategy does not include commitments to the Waterford–Wexford rail line, which featured in earlier national planning documents.

The omission has prompted criticism from local representatives and renewed debate about regional balance.

The decision also comes amid wider frustration over the absence of new funding for key transport projects.

These include upgrades to the N24 and N25, as well as investment linked to Waterford Port and offshore renewable energy development.

Concerns Over Regional Connectivity

Sinn Féin TDs David Cullinane and Conor McGuinness said the latest strategy shows the South East continues to fall behind other regions.

Deputy Cullinane said the Government had failed to follow through on earlier rail commitments and warned that the lack of investment undermines economic growth and safety.

He also pointed to the absence of funding for Waterford Airport and strategic road routes.

He said Waterford Port should play a central role in offshore renewable energy and argued that rail links between Waterford and Rosslare are essential to support future development.

Road Safety and Infrastructure Gaps

Deputy McGuinness said the exclusion of the rail line reflects a broader lack of planning for the South East.

Adding the Government cannot promote renewable energy and port expansion while neglecting transport infrastructure.

He highlighted safety concerns on the N25, describing parts of the route as substandard and dangerous. He said the road carries heavy traffic and requires urgent upgrading.

Calls for Reassessment

The criticism adds to ongoing calls for the Government to reassess its transport priorities and deliver balanced regional development.

Local representatives argue that without sustained investment in rail and roads, Waterford rail investment and wider infrastructure plans will continue to lag behind national targets, leaving the region at a disadvantage.
