Waterford has once again earned the prestigious Waterford Purple Flag 2025 accreditation, confirming the city’s reputation as one of Ireland’s safest and most vibrant night-time destinations. The recognition celebrates Waterford’s strong mix of entertainment, dining, and culture, alongside a firm commitment to safety and community well-being between 5pm and 5am.
Waterford’s Ongoing Commitment to Night-Time Excellence
The Waterford Purple Flag 2025 renewal recognises the city’s continued efforts to maintain a thriving and secure evening economy. Key achievements include the introduction of community safety wardens, who help make the city centre more welcoming, and the ongoing success of Purple Flag partnerships linking businesses, residents, and community organisations.
Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan, said the achievement reflects teamwork across the community:
“I am delighted that Waterford has retained the title once again in 2025. This accreditation reflects the collective effort of the Council, local businesses, and community stakeholders who showcased Waterford’s vibrancy and energy when assessors visited during the summer.”
Collaboration at the Heart of Success
In July, the Purple Flag Assessment Team toured Waterford with representatives from Waterford City and County Council, the Purple Flag Committee, and local business leaders. Assessors explored restaurants, arts venues, and nightlife hotspots while meeting An Garda Síochána to discuss safety measures.
Julie Walsh, Purple Flag Administrator with Waterford City and County Council, said:
“The Purple Flag is testament to Waterford’s buoyant nighttime economy, which has so much to offer.”
Boosting the Night-Time Economy
A key initiative supporting this success is the Night-Time Economy Pilot Grant for 2025, which funds creative and cultural projects that add new energy to the city during evening hours. The scheme highlights Waterford’s dedication to inclusion and community vibrancy while strengthening its night-time economy.
Waterford Among Global Purple Flag Destinations
Waterford joins more than 100 Purple Flag destinations around the world, including cities and towns across Ireland, the UK, Sweden, New Zealand, and Australia.
With Waterford Purple Flag 2025, the city continues to set the standard for a balanced, safe, and exciting night-time environment that celebrates culture and community spirit.
