Waterford's 10 fire services attended 31 more fires during September this year than last.

According to council figures, 88 were attended last month, up from 57 during the same month in 2021.

The total number of fires in the county last year was 520, but that has already been surpassed with 530 occurring between January and September this year.

However, of that figure, 164 have been false alarms.

It comes as Waterford's emergency services are urging people to report any bonfires in the lead-up to Halloween.

Sergeant Dave Butler is reminding people that all bonfires are illegal.

"If people see bonfire material within their communities being hoarded, we would ask them to make contact with a dedicated helpline number," he told WLR.

The number was set up specifically to report stockpiling of bonfire material, and is 0818 10 20 20.

Sergeant Butler is reminding people of how dangerous the fires can be.

He said they often collapse or explode without warning, resulting in serious injuries for anyone closeby.
