Bus services, the North Quays, and the Greenway are among the topics covered by the new Waterford Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy.

The document was published this week and aims to address the growing demands for the area up to 2040.

It's predicting an 80% increase in Waterford's population in the coming years.

Green Party Councillor, Cristiona Kiely, says more people means a real need for the re-allocation of road space.

While many projects within the strategy concern the North Quays region, there are also many changes for rural areas.

"We have new bus connects, increased frequency of bus services, public transport, more rural bus services, we have a lot of projects that are already in the pipeline," Cllr. Kiely said.

Other projects such as the moving of Plunkett Station and the Sustainable Transport Bridge will be getting underway from January.

Some of the other changes that will be seen are the pedestrianisation of areas, something that Cllr. Kiely knows people will not be happy about.

She also acknowledged that she is aware that some projects will be controversial, even labelling some as "drastic."

Plans include the opening of some walled boundaries and cul-de-sacs in the region, as well as the creation of DIY streets.

Pedestrian and cycle crossings are also planned to link areas that are separated by roads.

"We have to get behind them because if we don't they're going to stunt the growth of Waterford," she said.

One element of the Transport Strategy is Sustainable Transport.

Under this section, Waterford will be the first Irish city to have a fully electric bus fleet.

Cllr. Kiely says investment in active travel is the only way to make Waterford safer while also helping the planet.

The Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy Plan has been developed by the National Transport Authority in collaboration with Waterford City and County Council, Kilkenny County Council, the Southern Regional Assembly, and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
