A Waterford MEP has introduced a resolution in the European Parliament on Ocean Governance.
The Green Party's Grace O Sullivan says it's fundamentally about protecting the oceans around us.
The MEP has brought forward a resolution to the European Parliament, which she hopes will focus policy makers minds before the COP Convention on bio diversity in Montreal in December.
She told WLR News that Ireland as an Island nation understands the importance of being surrounded by a healthy ocean.
"It's about protecting biodiversity in the oceans and we can only do that if out oceans are healthy," she said.
She applauded Minister Malcolm Noonan for introducing a basking shark protection last week.
People along the coasts will recognise these sharks as passive creatures.
"We ignore call's to protect oceans at our peril," Grace said while speaking about a resolution to the European Parliament on Ocean Governance
A significant part of her resolution is to stop the exploration and exploitation of fossil fuels in the Artic and Antarctic
Our oceans cover more than 70% of the planet , therefore it is important they have a healthy eco system, not only for this generation but for generations to come.
Grace supports the 30X30 initiative which hopes to see 30% of our marine areas protected by 2030.
"We need green protected areas where there's 30% by 2030 of marine protected area, where we give the resources and stocks a chance to reproduce," she said.
