Waterford MABS warns governments new broadcasting bill will put pressure on families

Waterford MABS say they are concerned that the governments new proposals for a broadcasting licence will increase pressure on some Waterford families.

The new Broadcasting Bill announced by the government earlier today will mean people who watch programmes on laptops and tablets will have to pay a charge similar to the TV licence fee.

The Money Advice and Budgeting Service in Waterford say this will hit everyone.

James Quinlan is Mortgage arrears adviser with Waterford MABS:

"Nearly every household has at least a smart phone, so everybody is going to be caught in this. At the moment they are estimating that 12% of people don't pay the licence fee but it will depend on how they are going to handle the charges going forward. But it will put extra pressure on families."
