After more than three decades of fundraising and campaigning, Waterford Hospice Movement has announced it's reached its goal of €6 million promised to the HSE for the provision of the South East Palliative Care Centre.
In a statement, the organisation thanked "the generosity of the public and the unfailing efforts of our fundraisers and supporters."
The Waterford Hospice Movement and the Community Specialist Palliative Care Homecare Team have been accommodated in the new South East Palliative Care Centre (SEPCC) since July 2020. The new state of the art inpatient unit began accepting patients in October of this year.
Each of the 20 in-patient rooms has its own individual patio garden on the lower ground floor of the two storey SEPCC in the Dunmore Wing of UHW. These facilities were designed to offer the appropriate level of patient comfort and privacy for patients and their families at such a difficult time in their lives.
Waterford Hospice Movement has also gratefully acknowledged the additional allocation of once off funding of €200,000 announced earlier this month by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly. These monies will be used by WHM to clear its debt for the SEPCC, and to fulfil the €6 million commitment to the HSE.
Earlier this year the governance and costs of the Community Palliative Care Service previously provided by WHM transferred to the HSE.
The Waterford Hospice Movement said it can now focus its efforts on supporting, as opposed to providing, Palliative Care, through Complementary Therapy Services.
Chairperson Danette Connolly said :
We are delighted that the organisation is at this stage. For over thirty years, volunteers, board members and the community have worked so hard to make this all happen. We look forward to now aligning the organisation with the future needs of the palliative care services
