Waterford City Gardaí say the number of arrests made during St Patrick’s Day is up on recent years.
A total of 16 arrests were made yesterday while two Gardaí were injured in separate incidents, although there were no incidents to report during the city’s parade.
One incident occurred in the Barronstrand street area around half six yesterday evening.
Four people were arrested for public order incidents and a Garda was assaulted resulting in an injury to his hand. He attended University Hospital Waterford for treatment and was later released.
All arrested are in the early teens to late 20s.
A female Garda while on duty on John Street was assaulted in the early hours when she was struck in the back of the head by a flying can full of drink. No arrest was made and Gardaí are checking CCTV in the area and the Garda did not require medical attention.
Gardaí are also investigating an incident in the Poleberry area where a woman was set upon by two men while walking home at around 7.20pm yesterday.
The woman was uninjured and any witnesses can contact Waterford Gardaí on 051 305 300.
