Thousands of farmers and supporters gathered in Athlone today for a national protest against the EU-Mercosur trade agreement.
Having made its way around the local area, the demonstration returned to the Technological University of the Shannon’s Midlands campus.
Crowds filled the International Arena and speeches followed which were broadcast on large screens outside.
Members of Waterford IFA were in attendance, including County Chair Mark Connors.
Speaking to WLR, he said the event was very well supported.
“The estimate is that 1,500 tractors were in attendance and 25,000 people signed a petition so it’s very significant,” he said.
“There was real anger towards the EU. Farmers see what has happened as hypocrisy. We’re expected to produce a product to a very high standard in this country, but we are now going to important products which do not meet that standard.”
EU countries yesterday gave provisional clearance for the trade deal with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay – but it still needs to be backed by the European Parliament.
