Waterford City and County Council has carried out a coordinated operation to target illegal cash-for-cars operators involved in unregulated vehicle disposal.
The mystery shopper initiative saw Council staff work with An Garda Síochána, the Revenue Commissioners, the Department of Social Protection, and the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authority.
During the operation, officers identified individuals collecting end-of-life vehicles without permits and failing to bring cars to authorised treatment facilities.
Council officials warn that improper dismantling creates a serious environmental risk.
Senior Executive Engineer Niall Kane said scrapped vehicles contain hazardous fluids and gases.
Explaining that incorrect removal of fuel, oils and coolants can contaminate groundwater, and that operators must safely capture air-conditioning gases during depollution.
The End-of-Life Vehicles Regulations 2014 state that authorised treatment facilities must process all end-of-life vehicles.
The Council warns that anyone who uses an illegal operator may receive a €100 fixed penalty.
Waterford City and County Council urges owners to check that collectors hold a waste permit, request proof of authorisation, and demand a Certificate of Destruction.
Vehicle owners can verify permits through the National Waste Collection Permit Office or by contacting the local authority.
