Waterford City and County councillors have unanimously supported a motion calling for the mandatory teaching of Ireland’s national anthem in schools.
Members passed the proposal during the February plenary meeting of the council. The motion asks the Minister for Education to examine introducing a requirement that all primary and post-primary students learn Amhrán na bhFiann.
Call for Curriculum Change
Sinn Féin councillor Donnchadh Mulcahy proposed the motion.
The proposal recognises the anthem as a symbol of Ireland’s national identity, shared history and civic life. It also highlights the role schools play in promoting civic awareness, cultural understanding and respect for national traditions.
Councillors agreed to write to the Minister for Education urging the Department to consider making the teaching of the anthem.
Speaking on Deise Today Cllr. Mulcahy said making the teaching of the anthem mandatory would be unifying and create inclusion.
Broad Cross-Party Support
Sinn Fein Councillor Kate O’Mahoney seconded the motion and said the anthem represents more than national identity. She described it as an important part of Ireland’s cultural heritage.
Fianna Fáil councillor John O’Leary also backed the proposal. He told the meeting that he regularly attends GAA matches and believes people do not always show the anthem the respect it deserves.
Independent councillor Joe Kelly described the motion as timely. He said the anthem forms a key cornerstone of Irish life and stressed the importance of ensuring people living in Ireland understand its significance.
Fianna Fáil councillor Jason Murphy lightened the discussion by joking about a reference to his party in the anthem’s opening line.
Unanimous Approval
All councillors present voted in favour of the motion.
Speaking afterwards on local radio, Cllr. Mulcahy said students across the country should understand both the meaning and the importance of the national anthem.
If adopted at national level, the proposal would require schools to formally teach the lyrics and context of Amhrán na bhFiann as part of civic and cultural education.
