A Waterford councillor has criticised recent fare increases on Local Link bus services, saying the changes are placing added pressure on rural communities.
Catherine Burke raised the issue during the March plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council, where she called for immediate action.
“Vital Service” for Rural Communities
Cllr Burke praised the Local Link service, particularly for people living in rural areas such as the Comeragh region.
She said the service plays a crucial role in helping people travel to work, college and medical appointments.
Burke said she regularly uses the service herself and described it as a key part of making public transport accessible outside urban areas.
Sharp Fare Increases Highlighted
However, Burke said recent fare increases came into effect without notice and have significantly raised costs for passengers.
She outlined several examples raised by constituents.
An adult travelling from the Bunmahon and Kill area using a Leap Card now pays €28 per week, compared to €14 previously.
Student fares on the same route have increased from €10 to €20 per week.
Meanwhile, the fare on the Local Link Route 667 has more than doubled, rising from €2.50 to €5.50 for a single adult journey.
Burke said these increases come at a time when more people have started using the service.
Concerns Over Impact on Commuters
Burke warned that higher fares could push commuters back towards using their cars.
She said public transport must remain affordable if it is to compete with driving.
She also raised concerns for people who do not have access to a car, saying they will carry the full burden of the increased costs.
Burke said the lack of notice about the changes showed a lack of respect for passengers, particularly vulnerable users and young people who depend on the service.
Call for Review and Better Communication
Burke urged the council executive to contact the National Transport Authority to seek a review of the fare increases.
She also called for better communication with passengers in the future.
Burke said authorities must provide clear notice and proper advertising before introducing any changes to fares.
Push to Protect Rural Transport
Burke stressed that communities value the Local Link service and want to see it continue to grow.
However, she said authorities must ensure fares remain fair and transparent.
She warned that without action, rising costs could undermine public transport use across rural Waterford.
