A Waterford Councillor says he believes bicycle docks, similar to those in Dublin, could be in place in the City by 2020.

Fine Gael’s John Cummins has called on the Council to engage with the National Transport Authority to set up a public bike scheme, and to carry out a review of existing cycle ways.

“We’ve had the roll-out of new buses across Waterford City and increased frequency in terms of timetabling,” he says, “there are still gaps in terms of the provision of such services – but the city bike scheme would be a great addition to that because congestion in a city that is expanding is something that has to be addressed.”

He says Waterford is well suited for such a scheme.

“I’d be very hopeful that we can have the delivery of this scheme by early next year,” he says, “and I think that would be a win-win for everyone across Waterford City. It would promote a modal shift and encourage more people on those short, point-to-point journeys to use bikes.”
