An Independent Councillor in Waterford City is calling for river taxis to be introduced on the Suir.

Cha O’Neill first proposed the idea back in 2002 and two potential investors came forward.

However, he says the Department of Marine objected at the time as there were a lot of large vessels coming up the river.

Councillor O’Neill says “We have a beautiful marina on the Quay, a fantastic greenway that can actually benefit as another tourist attraction and the idea was to put a jetty down near Waterford Castle and another in the vicinity of Waterpark and then we have all our own jetties all around the river that people can hop on and hop off. This could alleviate a lot of traffic congestion on the Dunmore Road”

Metropolitan District Manager Fergus Galvin says they would be quite happy to engage with anybody who has any ideas to run something and come to some sort of arrangement on that.
