A state auditor is criticising Waterford Council for allegedly not pursuing a former mayor over a €700,000 clean-up bill for the removal of plastic waste from a site owned by his company.

Fine Gael Councillor Declan Doocey's recycling company was previously brought to the High Court for allegedly storing over 5,300 tonnes of toxic waste on his land.

Although the case was settled last year, the council has since racked up a bill of €739,000 after they carried out clean-up works on the site.

Auditor James Moran, in his annual report on the council's finances, said they had 'not sought to recover its costs from the owner who is a former mayor and current member of the council.'

Funds from the Environment Department have been used so far to cover the clean-up costs while the council has told the journal dot ie that 'all appropriate actions in accordance with their statutory obligations will be pursued'.
