Communities across Waterford are set to benefit from €564,000 in new funding under the Climate Action Fund (CAF). The investment will help local groups develop low-carbon projects and promote environmental sustainability throughout the county.
The funding forms part of the Community Climate Action Programme, which empowers community-led initiatives focused on climate awareness, education, and practical action.
Local Focus on Climate Leadership
The initiative aims to support towns and villages in developing projects that contribute to national climate and energy targets. Local authorities will partner with community groups to deliver these projects, ensuring that action happens at the grassroots level.
Five Key Themes for Community Projects
Projects supported under the scheme will focus on five key themes:
-
Community energy
-
Travel
-
Food and waste
-
Shopping and recycling
-
Local climate and environmental action
These areas aim to make sustainable living more accessible while encouraging innovation and collaboration among local groups.
Community Support and Guidance
Each local authority will deliver the programme through Community Climate Action Officers (CCAO), who serve as a key resource for groups seeking to reduce their carbon footprint. These officers guide, advise, and support communities in developing projects that have a meaningful local impact.
The second phase of the Community Climate Action Programme builds on the success of Phase 1, which saw €24 million allocated nationwide to 650 community projects.
Empowering Local Change
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister John Cummins encouraged all community groups in Waterford to get involved, saying the programme “shows how local ambitions can be supported” and that Fine Gael “has always believed in empowering communities.”
